Critique Criteria for songwriting

20130129-DSCF1870

I’m pretty excited about 7in7 this time (“how excited?” you ask? Enough to take a silly photograph of myself holding a hand-written sign!). I’ve been thinking of ideas, and I’m ready to get stuck in and see what comes out. It’s just a shame that tomorrow is one of the most solidly booked rehearsal days I’ve had in a while – I think I’ll have to get up a couple of hours earlier to get started on something!

I hope that you, dear reader (putting an ‘s’ on that would be a little ambitious) will give me some feedback during the process, and so here are a couple of helpful song-critique guides:

Theme/topic:

Purpose or general use:

Does the composition fit this use? Why?

Text and Theological Truth:

Accuracy

Relevancy

Clarity

Creativity (Lyrics):

Rhyme/meter

Poetic pictures/imagery

Vocabulary

Musicality:

Overall singability

Too repetitive or too original

Harmonization

Melodic line
