7 in 7

7 in 7 challenge – Day 7: Lead us Lord

I’m a bit late posting this, but I did finish the song yesterday (day 7), so it’s ok.

For the 7th and final day of the 7 in 7 songwriting challenge, I used the idea of the 7th day as a starting point for a hymn (a much more difficult undertaking than a pop-format song). I had thought about incorporating ‘shabbat shalom’ but it didn’t eventuate. The hymn draws fairly heavily on thematic ideas from Hebrews:

The verses are:

Lead us, Lord, to rest in you,
A Sabbath for your people.
Give us ears  to hear your call
which leads us out of exile;
A voice which spoke in history,
Whose “finished” cry has set us free.
Lead us, Lord, to rest in you,
And dwell in us, your temple.

Lead us, Lord, to worship you
In truth and by your Spirit,
Entering the holy place
Alone by Jesus’ merit,
For as our High Priest, in our place
The Son of God pours out his grace;
Lead us, Lord, to worship you,
For you alone deserve it.

Lead us, Lord, to trust in you,
To hope in your salvation,
Sure that you will make of us
A holy new creation.
Refine us with your living word;
Oh, may our hearts with love be stirred!
Lead us, Lord, to trust in you,
Our only firm foundation.

  1. A few changes to the 3rd verse:

    Lead us, Lord, to trust in you,
    Assured of your salvation,
    Knowing you will make of us
    A holy new creation.
    Refine us with your living word;
    Oh, may our hearts to hope be stirred!
    Lead us, Lord, to trust in you,
    Our only firm foundation.
