Stealing Herz: what about Verdi pitch?
As google is telling me it’s Heinrich Rudolf Hertz 155 birthday today, it seems only fitting to highlight this fascinating video I saw recently (thanks to The Diction Police):
It’s an issue I’d been thinking about recently. German orchestras play at A = 443 Hz, which I’m told is thanks to Karajan, who liked the brilliance it gave. I’m pretty convinced by the argument that we should sing at the pitch composers wrote in, after all, we generally sing everything in original language now, and we already have the standard practice of ‘baroque pitch’ (415Hz) for Handel and Co., so why not ‘romantic’ pitch?
